About

We’re a worker-owned design cooperative creating timeless architecture and interiors inspired by the past, designed for the future. Whether working on new construction or historic renovation, our approach is always tailored to our clients and the region—creating homes that integrate modern-day living with classic New England forms. Rather than recreate history, we seek to build upon it sustainably, efficiently, and beautifully.

Since founding the firm in 2008, Kevin Browne has grown this studio from a one-man operation into a full-service design firm where architecture and interior design are practiced together under one roof. In 2025, KBA became a worker-owned cooperative—a structure that puts the team designing your home in shared ownership of the studio behind it. It’s a model we chose on purpose, because the relationships we form on a project are meant to last long after the keys change hands. With collective decades of experience, we’re dedicated to designing the home you’ve always hoped for through meticulous care and thoughtful expertise.

What sets that work apart is how completely the pieces fit together. Because our team practices interior architecture as well as interior design, the bones of your home—proportions, millwork, lighting, the kitchen you’ll gather in—are designed in concert with the furnishings, finishes, and materials that bring it to life. No handoffs between firms, no gaps where one vision gives way to another. A single idea, carried from structure all the way down to the last detail.

That coherence begins with listening. We don’t arrive with a signature style to impose. We start by understanding how you live, what inspires you, and what feels meaningful day-to-day. From there, we translate those ideas into spaces that feel authentic to both you and the architecture.

Our projects have been featured in Dwell, the Boston Sunday Globe, Houzz, Maine Home + Design, Décor Maine, New England Home, and more. We are NCARB-certified and affiliated with the American Institute of Architects and Passivhaus Maine.

Home is Wherever You Are - Map

Home is wherever you are.

We’ve collaborated with clients on every kind of site, from the heart of the woods to the rockiest coast to the best views in the city. Our projects can be found all over Maine, throughout greater New England, and beyond. No matter where you call home, we’re ready to go the distance to work with you.

Sustainability

We strive for “good” design—site-specific, efficient, healthy, comfortable homes that make a minimal impact on the environment. We consider everything from how a home is sealed and insulated to the relationship between its windows and the solar angles it meets throughout the year, analyzing with energy modeling from the start and testing efficiency during the construction process.

That commitment carries indoors. In our interiors, we favor durable, responsibly sourced materials chosen to age well—natural finishes that tie a home to its surroundings and only improve with years of everyday living. To us, sustainability is as much about longevity as it is about performance.

Our Team

At our firm, architecture and interiors are not separate departments; they operate as a single studio in constant collaboration. This integrated approach ensures our homes feel truly cohesive rather than simply coordinated after the fact. In 2025, KBA became a worker-owned cooperative, a structure founder Kevin Browne chose because the people who design and build your home should have a real stake in the studio behind it. Five team members now sit on the board, with two more on the pathway to ownership. The reasoning was simple: when the team is invested in the long-term health of the firm, that investment carries into every project we take on, and every client relationship we build. We pride ourselves on being careful listeners, open communicators, respectful collaborators, and responsive partners throughout the entire process.
