Located in the historic district of Portland, this West End renovation project aimed to revitalize a 1970s-era home. The owners wanted to live in the city and be within walking distance to work. They purchased the multi-family home with the hopes of redesigning the interconnected spaces and levels to create a contemporary, one-family residence.
The original home did not have a main entrance with a 4-bay garage being the main structure visible from the street. A main entryway replaced the garage providing a more accessible and inviting entry point. The staircase was redesigned to improve circulation and connectivity between the different levels of the home. An open, airy steel handrail enhances the sense of space and light. New windows were strategically placed to increase natural light throughout the home, making the interior brighter and more inviting. Rooms were moved around to optimize the use of space and improve the overall flow of the home. The clients were very involved with the process, especially interiors and making sure the fireplace was a focal point of the living room. A design challenge of this project was the code restrictions due to the home being located in a historic district and ensuring the redesign was approved by the historical board.
This historic district renovation project in the West End of Portland transformed a 1970s-era multifamily home into a welcoming, functional one family home.
